The Hill team was in excellent company when we discovered the charming wine bar and cafe aptly named – In Good Company, in Rockland, Maine.




Chef Melody Wolfertz shared a recipe with us for:

Garlic Scape Pesto

1 cup grated Parmesan cheese

3 tablespoons fresh lime or lemon juice

1/4 pound scapes (garlic scapes, are green shoots with a sweeter, milder garlic flavor)

1/2 cup olive oil

Salt to taste

Directions:

Puree scapes and olive oil in food processor until smooth.

Stir in Parmesan cheese and lime or lemon juice and season to taste.

Serve on bread, crackers or pasta.

After a long and exhausting day, In Good Company was the perfect antidote with its extensive selection of wines by the glass and tapas-style dining in a relaxing and quiet atmosphere.

Since we had read about this small cafe in Yankee and Down East magazines, we knew it would be good. Everything we tasted was delicious and perfectly served.

Our knowledgeable waitress pared the perfect zin with artisan cheeses and fresh, ripe fruit. In Good Company is a delightful way to relax after a long day. After the crowded hustle and bustle of airports and a packed schedule, we felt cool, calm and “at home”.

Locally born and CIA trained owner/chef Melody Wolfertz knows the perfect combination of culinary magic for her home town. After her CIA training in 1988 where she was awarded the Francis L. Roth for outstanding performance, she completed her externship at the famous and prestigious Willard Hotel in Washington D. C. For 13 years, she traveled around working at various well-known establishments learning as well as being able to meet and cook for Julia Child, before she returned to Rockland.

While managing the Wine Seller (another special place), Melody saw a need for a spot for enjoying good wine and food in a relaxed atmosphere. With a vision and a lot of hard work with help from local artisans, she renovated a former bank. Each of the eight walk-in vaults has been put to good use including one serving as a wine cellar.

The Hill Team would be happy sipping fine wines, at most affordable prices, with tasty, little morsels, every night of the week In Good Company.
