Today, a toast to Julia Child. It is not her birthday which I will celebrate August 13. It the week of the release of the movie, Julie and Julia on 8-7-09.

This movie resulted from Julie Powell’s book, which I have read twice. Her book became a best seller after she wrote 365 blogs with 524 of Julia Child’s recipes from the original Mastering the Art of French Cooking. I read this one many times and even managed a few recipes.

The Classic Martini

1-1/2 oz vodka or gin (Julia’s choice, in fact she told me that she “loved gin.”)
1/2 oz dry vermouth (This is classic, but I prefer less than 1/8 oz of vermouth)
Shake, not stir, with vigor until very cold.
Pour into a chilled martini glass, JC style (some like it on the rocks, but it gets diluted too fast for me).
Garnish with an olive.

Cheers and bon appetit.
