This just in…

Baur au Lac, Zurich, Switzerland is again voted one of the Top 100 Hotels in the World by Travel and Leisure Magazine, August 2010.

What a privilege to experience Baur Du Lac, one of the top 100 hotels in the world, last week on the shores of Lovely Lake Zurich.

Baur au Lac has been a favorite of mine since I worked near the vibrant lake city of Zurich.

Although I spent many Sunday afternoons in their beautiful lakefront park, I had never experienced the exquisite service and food of Baur au Lac.

Last week, I was fortunate to be one of the 40 journalists world wide invited to explore several parts of Switzerland. Of course, I choose Zurich, one of my favorite cities in the world. As the only journalist from the USA, I was honored to be a guest of this beloved grand hotel. Maralyn and Norm Hill will be on a different press trip to explore Switzerland in early September.

Luxury can defined in many ways. Some think of excess or abundance.

I like the definition in Webster’s,  “a condition of ease and comfort, adding to pleasure”. This is how I define the quiet elegance of Baur au Lac.

I would happily fly back to once again experience the chef’s version of Eggs Benedict. He browned the homemade hollandaise in the broiler for the best I have ever tasted. Look for Swiss chef recipes from the Hill Team this autumn.

Aside from the magical setting in their own park along the lake, Baur au Lac

is an easy stroll to the legendary Bahnhofstrasse, (the Fifth or Worth Avenues of Switzerland) the railroad station, art museums, boats, and the financial and business districts. Swimming in fresh, pure, water is outside your door. Simply jump in the lake. The airport is l5 minutes away.

There will be more stories about the food,  traditions, ambiance and service in this historic property that has been enjoyed by many generations of loyal guests. I wonder if it has something to do with the staff, whom from the moment I entered the gracious lobby, each one knew my name. Genuine hospitality.

For now, Where and What in the World offers thanks and congratulations for the well deserved honor of being one of the best in the world.
