Last week, we were in Seaside, Oregon for Travel & Words. I was fortunate enough to be asked to be the keynote speaker and lead a seminar. It was such a great experience to meet so many professionals.

While there, Allen Cox asked me if we had ever tried 2011 Albarino from Abacela Winery. When we answered “no,” Allen proceeded to purchase a bottle for us to try. Tonight was the night. I had prepared lobster bisque and this seemed like the perfect choice. It was.

This is the 11th vintage of Albarino produced from the Umpqua Valley Southern Oregon estate vineyards. Its Galician style exhibits flavors and aromas of crisp apples, pears, lemon, kiwi, and delicate white flowers. I picked up the apples, pears and lemon, but my skill is not at the level to detect them all.

The winery recommends pairing it with fresh seafood, but it worked quite well with the lobster bisque.

The accomplishments of Abacela with Spanish and Portuguese wine grapes like Albarino have contributed toward the wineries reputation as a pioneering American producer of native Iberian varietal wines.

Produced and bottled by Abacela in Roseburg, OR 97471. www.Abacela.com.
