Urban Switchel – A popular early American cooler, it combines molasses, ginger, apple cider vinegar, apple cider and dark rum.

Wayne Curtis, liquor writer and historian: “You can trace vinegar drinks back to the 18th century. The berries and fruits came and went so quickly, that people used vinegar as an acid to preserve them. With the addition of sugar and water, refrigeration-bereft American pioneers had a tart, bracing beverage. Of course, it wasn’t long before someone realized that shrubs made dandy mixers. You threw in some rum or whiskey, and that has a nice effect as well.”

Ingredients:

  • 1 ½ ounce Arroyo vodka
  • ½ ounce apple basil vinegar*
  • ½ ounce agave nectar
  • 4 ½ ounce Hornby’s Hard Amber Cider beer
  • 2 dehydrated apple chips

Preparation:  Add vodka, vinegar and agave nectar into a shaker and stir slightly. Pour over ice and top with Hornsby’s Hard Amber Cider beer. Garnish with two apple chips.

*For the apple basil vinegar: Fill a glass jar ¾ with fresh apple slices, basil, figs, and grapes. Next fill the jar completely with apple vinegar. Let the jar sit tightly closed in a fridge for two months.
