Wedding bands were not common to men until the 20th century. The history of wedding bands has its source in Egypt where couples normally wore the wedding bands to show that their love was never ending and would be for eternity. Couples today have inherited this tradition by exchanging wedding bands as they marry in order to symbolize their union.

During World War II at Pearl Harbor, soldiers began to wear wedding bands to portray their endearment and love to their wives back in the United States. This was on December 7th 1941. Even after the end of the war prior to the German’s surrender, the tradition of wearing wedding bands for men still continued.

In fact, after the war the practice of wearing wedding bands became something that both the wives and the husbands followed. Therefore, the issue of wedding bands became a custom in both Canada and the United States. However, in United Kingdom as well as various European nations, it is optional to wear a wedding band.

Today, the wedding bands for men have become common and couples may choose to exchange wedding rings or they may choose wedding bands. Men’s wedding bands are available in various materials:

  • Antique,
  • Celtic,
  • Irish,
  • platinum,
  • titanium,
  • yellow gold,
  • white gold,
  • high polish,
  • satin-finished bands,
  • wedding band sets,
  • unique and Milgrain

However, regardless of the wide variety provided for the materials to choose from, most couples choose a similar band that is simple. For instance, they may decide to choose a gold wedding band for the man and a similar one for the woman. The essence of the similarity in the wedding band and the simplicity is in order to keep the tradition of bands alive as was the practice in traditional Egyptian times.
