Sourcing the American Diet

Americans are ever curious about knowing where the food they put in their body comes from. In every supermarket around the country you will see food marked with labels that says things like “locally sourced”, “organic”, and “sustainably produced”.

While consumers ultimately see this is a good thing, many don’t know the meaning of these terms and are even less sure about where the ingredients in their favorite foods actually come from.

To try and shine some light into this, Pots Planters & More researched the ingredients in 20 of the most popular American foods. They then visualized which foreign country or U.S. state is the most likely source of each ingredient.

Popular American food and drinks that were analyzed include:

  • Hot dog
  • Cheeseburger
  • Pizza
  • Peanut Butter & Jelly
  • Chili
  • Reuben sandwich
  • Buffalo wings
  • Coleslaw
  • Clam chowder
  • Chips and guacamole
  • Fried rice
  • French fries
  • Fruit salad
  • S’mores
  • Apple pie
  • Chocolate ice cream
  • Coffee
  • Beer
  • Martini
  • Margarita

To do this they analyzed USDA reports tracking hundreds of varieties of produce grown domestically and abroad, as well as meat, poultry and dairy products. They based their conclusions in which source state or country produced the highest volume of a given ingredient for U.S. consumption.

For example, Kraft marshmallows are the most popular U.S. marshmallow. All of Kraft’s marshmallows are manufactured in a single plant in Kendallville, Indiana. Therefore, statistically speaking, marshmallows in America are most likely sourced from Indiana.
