Maralyn Hill and I enjoy staying at the Marriott Hotel in Liberty Station in San Diego. Now we have another reason to return, Solare Restaurant. This popular Italian cafe has recently been voted as San Diego’s best. Brenda’s food lover and writer friend, Marilyn Rivas, from Mission Beach, sent us this review as a guest blogger.

Solare Ristorante Italiano Bar & Lounge   is an upscale Italian restaurant located in trendy Liberty Station in San Diego.  Liberty Station was once San Diego, California’s Naval Training Center.  It’s located in Point Loma, a community of San Diego. Liberty station has become a must not miss destination.  It is filled with fun restaurants, a movie theatre that boasts recliner seating and food as you watch your movie, markets, and even churches.  Usually on weekends there will be something of interest going on. It could be a dog show, art exhibits, or an interesting class.

Solare Lounge and Glass Wine Cellar

As you enter Solare your eye is drawn to a glass wine cellar which contains one table.  The glass door to the wine cellar can be shut for a private dining experience.  It looks like fun or perhaps an ideal spot to go with your significant other to have a private evening.

Solare Italian Bread

We started our meal with rustic Italian bread accompanied with olive oil, enhanced with Italian seasoning.  Next came a crisp Caesar salad with a shaved Parmesan cheese topping.  Their Caesar dressing had a pleasant tang.

My Chicken Piccata was excellent.  The  Piccata sauce was a classic recipe of lemon, butter, garlic, and capers.  This gave, even the baby carrots, a burst of flavor.  The chicken was tender and moist. Here was real Italian comfort food at its best. Our young waiter, Seth, was attentive and capable.  He made our  lunch fun and informative about Liberty Station.

After lunch I wandered about the restaurant.  They had another completely private room that would be perfect for company or staff luncheons.

Solare Dining

The bar was well stocked and looked friendly and casual.  But, my eyes kept returning to the darling glass wine cellar.  I would love to reserve it for a private lunch the next time I return to Solare.
