The scope for opportunities in Australia makes it a perennially popular destination for overseas workers looking for employment with a view towards becoming a permanent resident of the country. This can be achieved through the 457 visa scheme, whereby an overseas skilled worker completes a sponsored work placement (usually four years) in Australia, after which they can apply for permanent residency. The initiative has had its critics from within the country, many of whom feel that it enables businesses to take advantage of young labourers, but it nonetheless remains a much-utilised platform towards gaining Australian citizenship.

In any case, both the applicant and sponsor organisation must adhere to a series of strict guidelines if the visa application is not to be revoked. Applicants must have adequate health insurance and a strong English language fluency, while anyone with a criminal record or who is evidently unfit or unqualified for the nominated position will have their application rejected. Sponsor organisations are obliged to act lawfully at all times and comply with any direction from the relevant authorities. They must also provide training for the applicant and treat them fairly in terms of payment and conditions of employment.
